How to Do a Full Moon Ritual
The Full Moon marks the completion of a cycle and is a powerful time for reflection and release. It's an opportunity to shed old patterns, beliefs, and anything else that no longer serves your highest good, allowing you to step into the next chapter with renewed energy and clarity. Full Moon rituals can be as simple or elaborate as you like, with countless ways to do them. The most important thing is to choose practices that resonate with and feels authentic to you.
I'm here to share a straightforward ritual that's easy to follow, a gentle starting point for your own journey. Feel free to adapt it, adding or removing steps as you see fit. And remember, you don't need a full-blown ritual every time. Sometimes, a simple candlelit journaling session or a quiet moment of reflection is all you need to connect with the moon's energy.
1. Cleanse Your Space
Before your Full Moon ritual, ensure you have a nice clean space. Tidy up the room, clear away any clutter, and vacuum if necessary. This makes space for more energy to flow and you’ll immediately feel the difference once doing so! This is especially pivotal during the Full Moon as it’s a great time to release and clear out.
Next, it's time for an energetic deep clean. Light some incense or a smoke wand, setting your intention to clear out any stagnant or unwanted energy. As you waft the smoke around yourself and your space, visualise it carrying away anything that no longer serves you. Make sure you open a window to let the smoke, along with the old energy drift out into the night.
Prefer a smokeless option? My Cleansing & Purifying Spray, crafted with a blend of purifying herbs and essential oils, is a wonderful alternative to clear the air and create a fresh, inviting atmosphere for your ritual.
2. Charge Your Crystals
The radiant glow of the Full Moon offers a powerful opportunity to cleanse and charge your crystals. It's a simple yet potent way to clear away any stagnant energy and infuse them with the moon's illuminating power. Better yet, this method is suitable for every type of crystal.
Take a moment to cleanse your crystals using your preferred method (like a saltwater soak or smoke cleansing). Then, place them outside in a safe spot or on a windersill where they can bask in the moonlight.
The full moon's energy is strongest for about three days before and after the peak, so feel free to leave them out for the entire window. You might even wish to place a vessel of water alongside their crystals, charging it with lunar energy to drink or use in magical workings.
3. Create a Sacred Space
Create a sacred space for your ritual with special objects that will help to set the tone. If you already have an altar, perfect! Otherwise, gather a few meaningful objects that will help you connect with the elements and the moon's energy. Light a candle and some incense to create an ambiance. Curate a playlist of music that resonates with the theme of your ritual. Let your intuition guide you as you select crystals or other objects for your space. Choose those that feel particularly aligned with your current needs and intentions.
4. Meditate & Drop In
Before delving into the heart of your ritual, take a moment to ground yourself and tune into the potent energy of the Full Moon. Meditation, even for a few minutes, can help with this. Find a comfortable position, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. As you inhale, imagine drawing in the moon's radiant energy, and as you exhale, release any tension or negativity. Allow yourself to simply be present, fully immersed in the here and now. If you'd like a little guidance, explore the many Full Moon-themed meditations available online or through apps like Insight Timer.
Once you feel centered and grounded, open your eyes and set an intention for your ritual. What do you wish to release under the Full Moon's light? What aspects of yourself do you want to illuminate and amplify? Write down your intention on a piece of paper and place it on your altar, or simply hold it in your heart as you move forward.
5. Reflect and Receive Guidance
If you work with tarot or oracle cards, invite your spirit team (those of the highest truth and compassion) to offer guidance and insights. Ask questions that feel relevant to your journey:
• What needs to be released or let go of?
• What should I pay attention to in the coming weeks?
• What advice do you have for me in this moment?
Next, or alternatively, take a moment to journal. Reflect on the past month and the experiences that have occured. What events, emotions, or challenges stand out? What lessons can you gain from them? Are there patterns or beliefs that you need to release to move forward? If you set intentions during the New Moon, revisit them now. What progress have you made? Where have you been met with obstacles and resistance? What shifts can you make to realign with your goals and desires?
Let this process of reflection be a gentle unraveling, a chance to gain clarity and insight into your inner world.
6. Release & Let Go
It’s time to release whatever no longer serves your highest good. This could be thoughts, habits, relationships, people or any situations that feel heavy or stagnant. Remember, letting go creates space for new blessings to flow into your life.
With pen and paper in hand, begin to write. Start with the phrase, "Tonight, under the Full Moon, I release and let go of..." Allow the words to flow freely, without judgment or hesitation. Let your intuition guide you as you pour out onto the page, visualising yourself cutting cords with each item as you do so. Avoid reading it back so you don’t unintentionally draw those energies back into your field.
Now, choose how you'd like to release these burdens into the universe. You could simply rip up the paper and discard it, or for a more symbolic gesture, take it outside under the moonlight and burn it safely in a fireproof dish. As the flames consume the paper, imagine those burdens dissolving into the night, leaving you lighter and more free.
7. Complete Your Ritual
As you reach the end of your ritual, take a moment to honour this sacred time and seal your intentions. Close in a way that feels meaningful to you. Perhaps you'll offer a prayer of gratitude, visualise a symbol of completion, ring a bell, or simply say, "So it is."
Now, allow yourself to bask in the afterglow of your ritual. Curl up with a journal, lose yourself in a good book, or indulge in a cleansing bath with a few of your favourite grounding crystals. This is a time for relaxation, reflection, and integration of the Full Moon's transformative energy.
